Anti Bot measures

I think we just had our first automated user sign up, which means the spammers are on the way.

As a counter measure I have changed how you can register for this site. Now all registrations are manually approved by an admin. This will mean a waiting period but will hopefully weed out the bots. I have also added a new field asking how you found our site. This will not be displayed but will be used to check whether the registree is a real person or not.

If we were likely to get hundreds of people subscribing here I would do something like that but as I expect the subscription to peak about about 30 ish this should do for now

Even though the membership may be small the bots will still keep trying, so you will still have the same amount of attempted registrations... You right it's no big deal to check everyone but you also don,t want to lose anyone while they wait. maybe have a look here, i think this may be the one you want for this board type...

Trouble is that this system is a Joomla / Community Builder hybrid and the login is done through CB alone so any mods need to be CB based

I'll look into it anyway tho

Its too much effort right now to be honest for something that is a relatively minor issue. As I said I don't see the problem with the current method as we're hardly going to get to the situation where we're having 20 registrations per day. 1 per week is roughly it right now.

I will get round to it but its not a priority

Ok I think I've solved the "out of memory" issue with uploading pictures. Essentially I've told the site to take as long as it needs to resize images, therefore limiting the amount of memory it needs.

If this fails to work satisfactorily we will have to consider using a Flickr gallery or something.

If people would like to test out the gallery that would help me greatly. Cheers.

Ok its not fixed. Essentially the upload limit for PHP initiated uploads is too small.

Am currently waiting for the web hosts to come back to me about increasing the limit

Have changed the limit but it still ran out of memory which is a right pain.

Unless people can resize their images before they upload them (ie a 2600x2600 pixel picture is WAY too much for the server to handle - resizing to half that should work. Resizing it to 600 x whatever would be ideal)
we will have to look at external image hosting via Flickr (which means you would have to make a flickr account to upload pictures on to and then we could view them on the site.

Not ideal at all.

FIXED

Our webhosts have very kindly allowed us more memory usage for this purpose. The downside (at least from their point of view) is that it can potentially slow down the whole server - and thats not just our website that will affect. We could be sharing this server with well over 100 other wesbites.

HOWEVER they are happy for us to try and it now seems to work.

Ok, so I've had a play and it looks like the following...
Click on the icon on the gallery page near the top which says 'User Panel'
Click on 'new picture'
Title = Name of picture
Category = which grouping do you want it to go into
Description = if you can be bothered

Path to the picture - got to browse and find the picture on your pc that you want to download, then just click on the upload button below it.
Some things to note: Don't label your pic on the pc with %^* (funny signs) as it struggles to recognise them.

I've tried it a few times and it looks like it'll work well!
